It's Your Health
"Early autumn rain cleanses away smeared heat. A grateful traveler takes in crystal skies and crisp air. Distant mountains seem more vast and blue, and the sound of the waterfall grows more loud." Ð Deng Ming-Dao Autumn has come signaled by the changing colors of the aspens and maples. Unfortunately, these changes also signal the beginning of the cold and flu season. It is said that the best medicine is prevention, so what can one do to keep from getting sick? As the weather is cooling, the foods you consume should be light and warm. All cold foods should be eliminated as these can weaken your defense and invite in the cold. Iced drinks, ice cream, melons (especially watermelon), bananas, strawberries and cold salads are among the worst offenders. The autumn usually brings a cold wind, so the foods you eat need to have more warmth than your summer foods. Soups fit the bill. Make them light (no cream), chicken or beef based and full of vegetables. Add finishing touches of fresh grated ginger, sliced scallions, chopped cilantro, and crushed garlic to add a little spice (sweating capabilities) especially if the weather is extra windy or you become chilled. Following up with a good hot shower and a cup or two of hot water before bed can also do wonders. When winter does finally settle in, you can indulge in your favorite stews, chilis and heavier soups. Stay warm, stay healthy and enjoy. For more Information, you can contact Dawn Trowbridge (licensed Acupuncturist & Chinese Herbalist), at the Lake Tahoe Wellness Center, 530-546-8201. |
