The Lake of the Sky Report | Fall 2004 | Volume 1
Paige Meadows is a great place to hike, bike or run in the spring, summer and, particularly, in the fall. There are four interconnecting meadows, three of which are surrounded by Aspen groves. From late September to mid-October, the large aspen groves turn a vibrant golden orange. The trail I use most frequently is described below but there are a number of interconnecting trails that give the hiker, trail runner or mountain biker plenty of options to explore.

How To Get There
From the stoplight in Tahoe City, take Hwy 89 (aka West Lake Blvd.) south approximately 1.8 miles to Pine St.; turn right on Pine St., right on Tahoe Park Heights Dr., right on Big Pine, left on Silvertip and go all the way to the end and park. The trail head (initially a gravel road) is obvious.

The Trail
From the gravel road, go in about 100 yards and you'll see an unmarked "single track" trail on the right. Take that trail approximately 1/4 mile and go right when the trail hits a "T" intersection. Continue about 100+ yards and you'll see a trail on the left (it's kinda subtle so pay attention). Once you're on that trail, continue about another 100 yards and you'll "T" at the Tahoe Rim Trail. Go left and stay on the Rim Trail about a mile and it'll open up at the meadows. Once it opens up, continue about 1/4 mile to an intersecting trail on the left (note concrete "trail blocks" to protect the trail). Stay on this trail which meanders through the three remaining meadows (about 3/4 of a mile) and be sure to enjoy the views of Twin Peaks and the aspen groves that "light up" in early fall. As you approach the end of the last meadow, you'll encounter another "T" intersection (just after concrete "trail blocks"). Go right and you'll eventually run into the same dirt road on which you originally started...take a left and you'll get back to your car.

Total Time
If you're hiking, figure about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. If you're biking, it's less than 30 minutes so you'll probably want to make it longer by exploring some of the alternative trails that go off from the main trail. If you're running, figure about 30 to 40 minutes.

Some Tips
If you're not sure where you are, back-track. But remember the immortal words of my ol' buddy Mitch Brown: "You're only lost if you care where you are."
